and married mother of three complained about ma racing e-mails. the fbi said it traced those e-mails to this woman, paula broadwell, a married west point graduate and biographer of david petraeus. >> keep with us. that led to the eventual discovery of a romantic relationship between broadwell and general petraeus, and now general john allen is involved over his correspondence with the original woman, jill kelley. all sounds a little confusing, it is. let's get right to nbc's andrea mitchell who can help us sort it out. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. it is confusing. yet another military general drawn into an fbi investigation that prompted the resignation of cia director david petraeus. marine general john allen replaced david petraeus as commander in afghanistan last year, but allen has now been caught up in the fbi probe that led to petraeus' resignation as cia director. overnight the pentagon announced allen's nomination to be commander of nato has been delayed and the nomination of his successor in afghanistan speeded up. after military officials an
of the international forces in afghanistan is linked to the fbi investigation involving his predecessor. >> general allen is entitled to due process in this matter. >> reporter: secretary of defense leon panetta says the fbi has turned it over to the department of nefs investigator -- defense investigators. it centers around potentially inappropriate e-mails with jill kelley. that woman who sparked the investigation that led to petreaus' resignation from the head of the cia. >> my sister is a dedicated mother and wife. >> reporter: she first went to the fbi when she received threatening e-mails from an anonymous source. they were allegedly linked to paula broadwell. she was having an affair with petreaus and reportedly believed kelley was a romantic rival for his attention. investigators searched broadwell's home. they didn't say what they were looking for but carried out boxes boxes and a computer. general allen is in washington dc on his new job for head of the u.s. european command. president obama has now agreed to put the general's confirmation for that post on hold. >> while this matter is un
secretary leon panetta disclosed a dramatic turn in the petraeus case. fbi investigators had uncovered what the pentagon called potentially inappropriate communications between the general and jill kelley whom he and his wife got to know in tampa and were revealing between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of documents including e-mails over two years. officials say some were flirtatious, but the general strongly denies an improper relationship. the fbi discovered the e-mails during its investigation of kelley's e-mails, sparked by her complaints about anonymous threats which turned out to be from paula broadwell. they say they found no wrongdoing by general allen but turned the files over to the pentagon which monday ordered its inspector general to investigate. a social link between the two four-star generals, jill kelley who enjoyed socializing with the powerful in tampa while doing volunteer work for military families. she also gave people the impression she had some kind of state department status which officials say she does not. in fact, last weekend, she called police complaining about media
